Alli71I am 41 years old, married to my best friend and have 2 beautiful girls who are 7 and 9. I went in to have a colonoscopy as my dr was convinced I had ulcerative colitis but what he found instead was a large tumor...I was diagnosed with rectal cancer at the end of November and am about to begin the roller coaster ride of treatment in 2 weeks, with 6 weeks of chemo via a picc line and radiation therapy at the same time, followed by surgery in April..I'm still coming to terms with the whole thing-some days I'm really positive and other days it's all I can think about. Am relishing these next 2 weeks of "normal life" as I know that when treatment begins things will probably never be quite the same again...I would love to hear about similar journeys

StressedOutI really need some support! This is my (long and complicated) story. Bear with me.
I've been trying to find my dad on and off for years now. It is one of two people. I've finally been able to locate both of them, only to discover that one has stage 4 lung cancer that has spread to both lungs and his lymph nodes and has been given a prognosis of 8 months if the chemo doesn't work and 12 months, possibly more if the treatment goes well. I've ordered a DNA test to finally determine my paternity and have flown to Sydney to get to know the person who could possibly be my father, while I wait for the results.
It's incredibly stressful and depressing and i've never been through anything like this before. It's too much for me to cope with. Not knowing who my father is for 32 years is bad enough, without dealing with this as well. I was hoping there could be some miracle, but he talks regularly about his death and how he's ready to die. He's done everything he wants to do and doesn't have any regrets. I'm not ready for him to die, i've just met him! I don't want him to die at all! He also talks about how terrible he's feeling. He has a metallic taste in his mouth all the time and doesn't feel like eating often. He also said he's lost about 10 kgs. He's starting to feel really tired and isn't as fit as he was. He was diagnosed about 8 weeks ago and is on I think his 2nd cycle of chemo. He's talking about giving it up as he feels so terrible. That's a glimmer of hope for me and I really don't want him to do that. He has a brother who died of lung cancer a few months ago, 4 months after being diagnosed. It was more severe, but he talks about the same thing happening to him that happened to his brother and I find it very upsetting.
He lives at the bottom of a steep street in a government housing complex, which isn't really suitable. I don't know how to go about organising something else for him and he says he's got lots of stuff he has to get rid of. He says he's going to have to move into hospice care eventually, but says it will be depressing because of all the older people who will be there (he's 64). In the meantime, i'm trying to work out what i'm going to do. I'm staying at a backpackers hostel and don't really know anyone here. I'm probably going to need to get a job and sort out some other accommodation. Going overseas is supposed to be a fun time, but I just feel stressed out and depressed. My possible dad is still smoking and drinking. The doctor told him that quitting smoking wouldn't make any difference, but I can't believe that could possibly be true. He said he's tried everything possible to give up smoking in the past and nothing has worked. I want him to give up, but I can't make him. I've also talked to him about clinical trials, but he hasn't really looked into this. He says there's no miracle cure. I guess I couldn't really face that until I came over here and listened to him talking about it. This whole situation is so unfair and i'm having a really hard time coming to terms with it. I've got a lot of regret about not trying harder to find him sooner, as well as anger at my mum and the other possible dad for losing contact with each other.
I want to help him, but am finding it hard. Spending time with him is upsetting at times, just seeing how ill he is. I've offered to clean his house, as it's really messy and help him find another place. I'm also coming to his chemo appointment with him today. I've been looking into alternative treatments such as accupuncture and massage to help with some of the side effects. I've also looked into a private cancer hospital in NSW, but I don't know how this would work and how much it would cost. I think he's getting pretty good support, but can't help think there could be a more cutting edge treatment. I'm just really praying he can get through this, as I don't think I could cope with any other alternatives. I'm not really religious, but am going to go to church with him on Sunday and think i'll start going myself also. Maybe god could grant a miracle.
I would welcome any advice or support from anyone who's been through a similar experience with a relative (I don't think anyone has the same experience as me though!)

HealingAngelsI am a 44 yr old registered nurse who recently went on the holiday of a lifetime to the UK with my husband Steve, twin daughters Sophie & Emily who are 11yrs old and my Dad Hans. Whilst on holiday I developed right sided pain in my lower abdomen which was initially treated as a urine infection and a week later I was admitted to hospital to have my appendix removed. They commenced a laparoscopic appendectomy but were unable to locate the appendix, further investigation showed a mass wrapped around my appendix and they performed a right hemicolectomy removing part of my small & large bowel and also the ileocaecal valve. Following this was the longest 10days of our lives as we waited for the histology results to come back and they confirmed I have stage 4 bowel cancer.

I have had chemo and radiation (no folow-up chemo due to infection) and numerous smaller ops. I had a breast lump removed this year which was benign. I suffer from depression and went into menopause from chemo/radiation. I have been to some cancer council groups but I can't deal with them very well. I am a survivor though and glad of it.

(thanks to the interferon) But better then having lung cancer... In early march my lung Dr noticed my one Pupil was larger than the other.. So off to the Neureye Dr.. And after some fun tests discovered i had Horner's syndrome- So off for a MRI and they discovered i had a Large tumor (benign) in my Brain.. The Tumor was removed march 28, 2012- So far i am cancer free - still have sarcoid- which i find extremely annoying and still have the Horner's syndrome...
