Hello
My name's Nicole and I've just joined up!
Just trying to figure out how this website works.
Was diagnosed with Hodgkins Lymphoma last week and going to start chemo next week.
What is chemo like?

Re: Welcome new YACs

Hi 89nicole,
Sorry to hear of your diagnosis.
Chemo - some people who have had lymphoma would be able (and I am sure you will hear from someone) to let you know of any specific side effects for the type of chemo you may have for your particular cancer. From my experience (quite a while ago now) taste is one thing that is effected and your mouth tends to go dry as well as skin (hands especially). Something to help you to put up with the "nasty" effects of chemo treatments is to think of each treatment one down, one less to go through.
I am sure that lots of other people will have suggestions and ways to cope, of course one way is to come back to this site and tell us how you are going, we all care about our "family"
Good luck,
craftyone

Re: Welcome new YACs

Hi Nicole

Depends what chemo you have as to side effects and then it dependss on each individual really. As craftyone has said, you will get some side effects and taste is certainly one that most seem to experience at some stage or another.

You should be given information on each drug that you will have and what side effects you might experience. I felt pretty good when i had my chemo and a lot of people can feel that way. In fact I actually felt better once chemo had started than before and my pain levels decreased straight away.

Good luck from me also.

Re: Welcome new YACs

thankyou.
haha yes that is me feeding a 2 week old lamb.
umm it changes every day, i suppose im lucky in the sence that i havent actuly been sick just feel very sick and sleepy all the time, i was delayed a week because of my low white blood cell count. and i think the hardest thing at the moment is the hair loss, i got my sister to cut half my hair off this morning as i had long hair and it was just too much falling out.

Re: Welcome new YACs

Hi Megan

I had long hair also and had it cut in a shorter style and then shortly afterwards shaved it off. For me there was just too much hair falling on the hospital floor, which was kind of easier there because of the flooring but at home I had carpet to contend with and I was sooooooo not going to go there. So off it all came! It was an emotional time but i dont regret doing it.

Love the pic and lamb ... i have a sheep and a goat that i am looking after at the moment. Sean (sheep) is really a girl so will have to think of a girls name and I have named the goat Clement. The goat is a bit of a bully and butted me yesterday because I would not let him out of the pen. Smile

Re: Welcome new YACs

yeah my hairs about a bob now instead of way below my shoulder and id say as much as i dont want to, by the weekend itll be gone, i got a wig from the wig libary, and a few scarfs so i think thatll be the best thing to do.
haha how cute Smile well we were only baby sitting that lamb and two little goats for a couple of weeks, poor things thought they were dogs, always coming in through the doggy door and in winter snuggling up next to the fire :)they struggled a bit to get used to the farm life again haha.

Re: Welcome new YACs

Hi Megan

Very cute to have lambs coming in through the dog door. lol My dog used to get into the house through the cat door and be able to bring in very large bones, which used to drive me nutty. Am sure yours struggled to get used to farm life again after staying in a palace!

Not sure how long the goat and sheep are here for but am not going to be friends with the goat if he keeps butting me! Smile

I didn't do a wig, just used beanies and scarves and for the most part went without anything. Apparently there are tricks to wigs and wearing a little cap thing underneath them helps to stop itching and also heat.

Good luck with choosing a wig ... that could be fun.

Re: Welcome new YACs

Yes there very cute and im sure ull miss ur lil pets when they have to leave to, although sounds like that naughty little goat might need to be sent to the naughty cornner lol.

the wig thing is exciting but also very hard and sad at the same time. I actualy hadnt thought about itching and that when wearing a wig so that is something ill have to talk to someone about. thankyou, i only joined this group today and already feel like talking to you and reading other peoples stories on here have helped me greatly, im realy thankful for it all Smile

So thanks again.

Megan

Re: Welcome new YACs

Hi Megan

It is very mixed feelings to lose one's hair due to treatment. At least these days there is a lot of alternatives if we want them. You can take your wig to a hairdresser and get them to shape it to your face. Yw re the tips most of which I have learnt from this site. There is also a thing you might want to attend and that is called the Look Good Feel Bettter program. The one I attended had some good tips for makeup and hair issues too. You can find out information on this site and also through the hospital that you are attending. Social workers or cancer nurses are a mine of information.

Canteen is another organisation that is for young people and you might find that handy also.

I will miss the goat and sheep when they go, although not sure i will miss being head butted. lol I would like to get some more chooks but my son is anti that idea so I will have to work on him for that one.

Ok, time for me to organise things here.

Take care

Julie

Re: Welcome new YACs

Hi everyone,

Another young adult has joined the group. I was diagnosed with bone cancer in November last year. I have to admit that the hardest part has been losing my hair. When it started to come out I had it cut really short then had my parent shave the rest when it started to get really thin. I've still got a bit left but it's not much. I'm being treated at Peter Mac and I went down to the volunteers to pick out a wig from the library. They then cut the fringe for me. It was kinda fun trying on new hair styles Laughing out loud I've gone a bit longer and slightly red.

So far my chemo has gone well. I can already see the lump in my leg go down. I haven't been too sick but it has really dropped my immune system.

Talk to you all soon

Re: Welcome new YACs

Hi Paige

Welcome to the site, I hope you find it helpful. Sorry, I don't know anything about lymphoma apart from what I looked up on wikipedia just now. I was diagnosed with breast cancer 18 months ago when I was 33 and my treatment is mainly finished now.

The first week after I was diagnosed I was probably in shock, but I also clearly remember having the feeling that there was no use panicking yet - until we found out more after having surgery the next week. Then after the surgery I found out the good news that it hadn't spread and the bad news that I would need chemo and a mastectomy.

The first few weeks were odd. The whole world changed but also stayed the same. For a while I was a bit obsessed with who knew and who didn't. It was strange telling people the news. I took a slightly distasteful interest in the various people's reactions.

I was scared of the unknown but mainly I felt quite matter of fact about it all - not at all how I would have imagined it would have felt after a cancer diagnosis. There was a lot of new information to absorb and it was a bit overwhelming. I tried to just deal with one step at a time and not look too far ahead.

I hope you are doing ok. What surgery are you having?

Best Wishes
Allicat

Re: Welcome new YACs

Welcome new YACs and sorry for those with their new diagnosis.

I'm new to the site too.

Was diagnosed with bowel cancer in feb this year, just before my 41st birthday.
The cancer had been there a while, so it had spread to liver and some nodes in chest.

Am very scared with a nearly 2, and nearly 3 year old. I just keep fighting to be here for them.

Losing hair is hard and thanks to Julies suggestion to Megan, i just put my name down for the feel good look better workshop.

Be strong everyone as we all try and fight this together.
Nicole
