A thread where we can float and discuss any ideas for improvements and fine tuning to Cancer Connections we may have, ask other members to check possible bugs we've encountered, etc.

This thread is not designed to replace sending suggestions and bug reports to the administrators, but to shake out our ideas for improvements and clarify the source and nature of any problems we may experience with the site (eg whether the problem lies with the site or is at our end).

Admins if you want to start an official thread on this topic maybe you could just transfer the posts here into it and delete this thread.

Cheers,
Ed.

Re: Suggestions for improvements and fine tuning, and bug ...

My preference would be for darker text in the forums and throughout the site - it's by a considerable margin too pale for my eyes. And the orange-colored text in the forums is also too pale for my eyes - I'd like to see a darker color used.

If you have an opinion about text and font-related matters relating to Cancer Connections please do post it so we can (maybe) get a consensus. In today's world we need everything going for our eyes as they need to to an immense amount of reading and other close-in work over the course of our lives.

I like the size of the text on the forums and throughout the site - I find it quite easy to read.

Cheers,
Ed.

good idea for changing the font colours you outlined, as these colours are a little hard to keep focused on for a period of time Smile

Hi Ed,

I am happy to use this thread as space for this type of comments. We will definitely have some things that might not work the best and can be improved and always bugs that we might have been missed during the user acceptance testing.

Ed, Do you have a recommendation on the type of gray and/or orange that you think could work better?. Are you familiar with photoshop stuff? If you are able to tell me the hexadecimal code of the web safe colour you would prefer we can always give it a try.

Look forward to hearing from you,

Raul

Hi there everyone,
I'm happy with the new look site.

I am curious about the section in Profile/Personal info/About me, when I enter information there it doesn't seem to save. Unsure whether this is a bug or it is meant to be private and not visible to public. Let me know what you think.

Re: Suggestions for improvements and fine tuning, and bug ...

Hi Misti,
I don't know the answer but here's a suggestion. Go to Profile/Personal info/About me and make a change to your About me, and click on Save. Then log out, go to the home page and log in and click on People at the top of the home page. On the new page that displays you should see among other things your "About me". If the change you made to your About me was successfully saved it should appear there.

When I followed that sequence of events (at about 620am Thursday 19th Adelaide time) the change I made was successfully saved.

Totocol will have a much better understanding of whether there's a problem and what the cause may be than I do.
Cheers,
Ed.

Hi Misti,

Interesting. I have not heard to feedback from anyone else. Just also on Ed's question, have you pressed saved at the end of the page when you add your personal information?. You should get a message saying your changes have been saved. Then they should be visible on your profile and on the people tab.

Let me know,

Raul

Re: Suggestions for improvements and fine tuning, and bug ...

Raul and everyone hi,
My impression is that the website generally, including the forum, is beautifully set out - spacious, not cluttered, easy to find items on the pages. It's a work of art!

And I really like the font - I don't know what its name is as I don't seem to have one that matches it on my computer (by font I mean eg "Times New Roman" - I hope that's what the term font means to readers of this post). It's probably better than ANY font I have on my computer. It just needs darkening. I only have experience with simple webpage construction and free webpage editors such as Netscape Composer (and have never buit any website as complex as Cancer Connections). I'm not familiar with photoshop. The free webpage editors I use have facilities to choose the font colour from a rainbow spectrum, so I imagine photoshop has similar text colour selection. My suggestion to to experiment with dark navy blue or purple - something of that nature, or simply a darker version of the colour you are currently using.

My feeling is that orange should be replaced as a text colour throughout the website, even if it's the team's favourite colour. It simply isn't dark enough against the pale background and I doubt if it can be made so, not for text anyway - it's not a colour that stands out sufficiently to the eye. I would replace it with a dark colour somewhere between dark blue, dark electric blue, dark navy blue or you could go round towards magenta, but not greens or reds or yellows.

I test out text colours in an experimental file I open just for that purpose - I type or copy some text into it and then set the font to whatever I want my text font to be eg Arial and try out different colours, and when I find one that looks suitable I get the code for that colour by viewing the source code for the page.

I emphasise again that I think the website including the forum is beautifully composed - I don't think you'll be needing to make many changes somehow Smile

These are my suggestions anyway.
Cheers,
Ed.

Hi Ed,

Thanks for your nice comments.

What do you think of this new darker gray?. Do you think it makes it easier to read and for longer periods?

We are still debating a bit with the orange. Most links nowadays are either blue or orange but blue is one of the main colours in the background of the website (and one we cannot change)so there are areas where it might be an issue. At the moment the oranges are only present where there is a link. Orange is also on our branding guidelines. The other colour we can sue is yellow but I think that would be worst.

What do you think Ed (Don't forget to click F5 to update the changes if the font colour looks the same next time you visit the site)?.

Hi Raul,
Yes the new darker gray definitely makes it easier to read and for longer periods Smile

That was really my chief concern, the orange being a secondary issue.

I understand now about why the orange is there. Sounds like it would be best to stay with the orange and in the future it can always be changed if someone comes up with a suitable modification. A good thing about using orange is that it goes well with the blues in the pages whereas as you say there would be issues with using blue in place of orange.

I hope others will post their opinions if they feel there are any eye or colour issues for them - we all have our preferences and I'm but one of the users.
Cheers,
Ed.

I really like the "Our community Recently active community members" on the bottom of each page of Cancer Connections. This brings real people who are part of the Cancer Connections community onto every page of the site.

I also like the groovy "your virtual face or picture" images one can choose when one is joining the community. Having those available for new members to select makes it really easy for people registering to choose an image quickly, and they can replace it with a photo of their choosing from their own computer at a later date if they wish.
And on a lighter note, I haven't looked this cool for more years than I'd care to remember!
Cheers,
Ed.

Hi Raul,

in the future, will there be a place on this website, or better still within our own profile that we can add and share things like our favourite photos, videos, music, books etc?

if so how long before such features will be available?

cheers nikki Smile

Hi Nikki,

That is perfectly possible. The hard part is not the technical side but actually to decide how that could/would look like. Do you have a mental picture of how that could look like?. Maybe a page with an example of a site that does that very well?. For the videos own, I'd prefer not to host videos on our server so that it does not run slow but rather to embed youtube videos. What you need is to upload a video on Youtube and then you copy the code from it and post it in the appropriate place.

For the music, where you thinking of having an actual link to the song or a review or what type of content?

Look forward to hearing yours and everyone else's comments.

Hi Raul,

Its great that you think we can add some more creativey stuff and outlets for YACs.

You tube sounds fine for the videos Smile

Maybe we could have a section on the YACs homepage that says 'Young Adult latest photos' and this could be a good place where any YAC can upload and share with the public images of themselves, or creative photos they might have taken, scanned art work etc etc. Planet Cancer.org have a pretty snazzy photo setup. They have a photo link on the main menu bar which opens into sections like 'All photos' 'My photos' 'All albumns etc'.

Music i was thinking could be a more personal touch to be added to ones own profile... through a playlist application. Similar to what i have going on in my Planet Cancer homepage

I hope some other YACs might have some better ideas on how these creative elements could look and work for us here Smile

Hi everyone,
I agree with everything Nikki has said here in this discussion she's started on members favorite photos, videos, music, books etc. Many people love to share some of their photos, and maybe music and videos and books too, and it's a great way for members to get to know each other a lot better and develop friendships. My only "complaint' about this is that I don't have more time to view, listen and watch Smile
And I agree that embedding videos posted onto youtube is a good way to go.
Cheers,
Ed.

I am also hoping to have some some developments here too. I was also thinking, would it be better to have a separate blog page and profile page or maybe it would be better to combine them both?

Look forward to hearing ideas on this.

Hello everyone,

We have been having some discussions about how to best design the blogs homepage.

At the moment, all the blog homepage is doing is listing the blog entries of the user. Have a look at my blog homepage http://www.cancerconnections.com.au/blog/totocol

We want to make it much nicer than that as well as easier for everyone to find what they want and to do what you want.

We would love to hear your ideas. My approach is that anything is possible so just let me know what would your ideal homepage would look like and then we can take it from there.

Look forward to hearing your comments.

Hi Raul,
Re the blog home page, elsewhere I've seen the first half dozen or so lines of each blog entry displayed in addition to the title of the entry, eg see Nikki's home page on Planet Cancer at the link she's given in another post on this thread
http://myplanet.planetcancer.org/profile/nikki

This gives the blogger a chance to catch the eye of potential readers who might not otherwise visit the full blog entry, and potential readers a chance to assess whether it's a blog entry they may be interested in reading.

I wonder if in our metric age "dozen" is fading from the language. "Fifteen to the dozen", "a baker's dozen", etc.

Cheers,
Ed.

Hi Ed,

I was thinking something like what planet cancer does. A bit of info like in the profile page and then a little introduction of the blog entries with a link to read more. I will work on it on my test site and then will post some screen shots to see what everyone thinks.

Re: Suggestions for improvements and fine tuning, and bug ...

Hi Raul,

Just continuing on from re the blog stuff...

I looked up the meaning for the word 'blog' this morning at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blog

"A blog (a contraction of the term weblog) is a type of website, usually maintained by an individual with regular entries of commentary, descriptions of events, or other material such as graphics or video. Entries are commonly displayed in reverse-chronological order. "Blog" can also be used as a verb, meaning to maintain or add content to a blog.

Many blogs provide commentary or news on a particular subject; others function as more personal online diaries. A typical blog combines text, images, and links to other blogs, Web pages, and other media related to its topic. The ability for readers to leave comments in an interactive format is an important part of many blogs."

This definition encompasses what I think I blog should look and function like Smile

Also, I would like to share some of my favourite blogs so others can see what a blog can do and look like. Most of these are cancer related, but there is also a generic one that a friend of mine has started as a hobby.

Hi Nikki,

Thanks for your comments. I have been thinking about this more.

I thought maybe a way to do this could be by combining the profile and the blog homepage on one spot to make it easier for everyone and avoid confusions and at the same time to have a richer experience in one space.
What do you think?

I started playing with a test site to see how it can look. I will provide some screenshots when I have something more concrete. Hopefully at some point this week.

Have a lovely week Smile

Hi Raul,

Love to know if you think the site needs an 'about us' section that explains the reasoning behind Cancer Connections and what it hopes to achieve etc? I would actually like something similar on the YACs page aswell, combined with an intro and possibly some stats etc. I am happy to help write this up for you Smile

Hi Nikki,

Have you had a look at the about this website section at the bottom is every page?. Is that what you had in mind?. I am more than happy to include something along the lines you are talking about on the YAC's page. It would be fantastic if you want to volunteer to provide some background info.

Let me know more about what you think. Maybe we can have a quick chat to discuss it.

Hi Raul,

It was actually after reading through the 'about this website' section a few days ago that i thought there is vital info missing from this. this section to be is really about using the different features, and not the idea and values behind the actual service. So I still think an 'About us' section would be good. Perhaps Kim, Annie and the other staff could put together why the CC sees the need to provide such a service and what they hope to achieve by doing so. mmmmm hope this makes sense?

Love to do the YACs page. lets chat some more 4 sure.

hope your having a great wend BTW! Nikki

Hi Nikki,

Having a quite busy weekend actually. Off for a triathlon tomorrow and today I was visiting a correctional as part of a social leadership program I am on this year.

I'd love to have you more involved on the section you are suggesting. Let's definitely program a chat next week.

How does everyone think about having a live chat room?. Do you think it is necessary at this stage or should we wait a bit more until we have more people and we can have several chat rooms?

Hi Raul and Nikki,

Re "How does everyone think about having a live chat room?" - I know that some people love to use a live chat facility on cancer communities, and if it's not there they will ask for it soon enough. My opinion is to add a chat room in the not too distant future so it's there for anyone who wants to use it, and expand it when the need arises.

Re "hope your having a great wend BTW! Nikki" - "wend" baffled me for several minutes till I figured it out Smile Never heard that use of wend before - will be interesting to see if it comes into general use in the Australian vernacular.

Raul hi,
Here's a wild and ambitious idea from left field.

If the software that Cancer Connections is currently running on does not have scope to add photos, videos, music etc, you could consider switching to the Ning social networking software that Planet Cancer runs on, at least for the young adults section.

Eek! - well I did mention this was a wild and ambitious idea Smile

The basic software is free, and very easy to set up and use, but it comes with advertisements that Ning places, and storage and bandwidth limitations. Here's a brief summary in US dollars of what it might cost to have your own domain name rather than one with the word ning in it, remove the ads, and double the free storage and bandwidth quota. I'm mostly quoting from the Ning website here. All moneys are in US dollars.

To use your own domain name (which you need to register elsewhere), you need to purchase the premium service called "Point Your Domain Name to Your Social Network" for $4.95 per month and configure your domain name to point to your social network.

To remove the advertisements that run in the right column of your social network, you'll need to purchase the "Go Ad-Free" premium service for $24.95 per month.

By default, your social network comes with a quota of 10GB of storage and 100GB of bandwidth. This is a social network with approximately 5,000 photos or 500 videos. If you exceed this you can purchase one or more units of Get More Storage and Bandwidth for $9.95 per month. Each unit purchased will add another 10GB of storage and 100GB of bandwidth per month.

As I say, rather wild and ambitious, but nevertheless I throw it in the ring for contemplation Smile

Cheers,
Ed.

Hi Ed,

Thanks for your comments. The current software has the ability to add any type of file including videos, photos and much more. What I am trying to do is to find some ideas on how to best approach this. The great thing about this software our community is built on (Drupal) is that technically there are not limitations and we can basically play and create anything without having restrictions like the restrictions you have in Ning.

One of the main positive comments I have received is that the site so far is great because it is addressing an important need while still staying simple and user friendly. The challenge is to start adding the new features while still keeping that simplicity.

That is why I ask what everyone thinks the best look or position of these new features could be. I am planning to add videos and photos soon but just wanting to make sure we stay simple and user friendly.

Do you have any ideas on how we can do this?. On how it would look like?

Thanks Raul - "technically there are not limitations and we can basically play and create anything without having restrictions like the restrictions you have in Ning" - Drupal sounds great! I don't have the computer skills to work with such software - wish I did.

Re "Do you have any ideas on how we can do this?. On how it would look like?" - I reckon your instincts and skills for making a simple and user-friendly site have been pretty good so far, as the positive comments you've already received have shown, so if I were the owner of the site I would suggest you simply carry on putting items where you think they look the best - and the rest of us will tell you if we don't like it! Hi Ed and Nikki,

It is certainly challenging to find the best way to continue including new functionalities while at the same time keeping the site simple. If I told you the things we could include with this opens source software you would be impressed but then when coming down to deciding if we really need to go into very complicated things that might make the site very slow for people with slow connections or include some elements that most people are not familiar with (taxonomy, tag clouds, etc) then we need to stop and really make sure they will make our community richer.

What I had in mind (please let me know if you feel it is a good approach) was to add video functionality for blogs for the people that really wanted to use it instead than to everyone and then to add photos for everyone with some albums being created on member's profiles. What do you think?.

Hi Raul,

Your approach to video and photos sounds like a good strategy to me Smile

As for very complex things such as taxonomy, tag clouds, etc that most people are not familiar with, they sound like elements that could be contemplated a fair way down the track when you're fully satisfied with all the basics, and the community has grown considerably.

Speaking of tracks, I hope you have a good triathlon and don't get rained on.

Hi Ed,

Thanks, I did very well and it did not rain. In regards to taxonomy and tag clouds I also thought we could introduce them slowly as the community evolves as you suggest.

We are getting closer to having 700 registered members and we seem to be growing in a sustained way. Always hoping to be able to reach so many people out there that might benefit of being in contact with people with similar experiences.

Have a nice week, Smile

Raul hi,
I've opened very similar threads on fertility and on fears, in both the Cancer Journey All about cancer: diagnosis, symptoms, treatment and side-effects forum, and the Young Adults general discussion forum.

I'll try not to double post, but for these two issues central to both yacs and the wider cancer connections community it seemed the simplest way.

Congratulations on doing very well in the triathlon! I'd still be out on the course if I'd been in the race Smile

Hey Ed,

I noticed. I think it makes sense to do it that way.

In regards to the triathlon thing. I was thinking last night if I should try and do a half iron man for my 30th birthday this September. I thought I could maybe do some fundraising.

Hope you have some nice plans for the long weekend. I think I am just going to be around.

Yes I'm hoping to drive out into the country on a couple of days over Easter and listen to the birds singing without the ever present background of city noise.

Howdy All,

I've just joined & having a look around.

I wanted to ask is there a search function for the Forums?

if so please tell me where?

I found the search option on home page but it obviously doesnt work for the Forums for some reason.

For example if I input "surgery" as the keyword it tells me there are no matches!

Yet when I look at some of the Forums there is obviously Surgery mentioned in the Topics of threads????
