I was diagnosed withe VERY early bowel cancer in Feb 2008  but with advanced Mets in the liver. My liver looked like Swiss cheese, and was given 6 months without treatment. I have now had 10 cycles of Folfox6 + Avastin and am now nearly in remission. However I ant to remain on chmo for quite a while just to lick up any lingering nasties However I realize that Chemo only "buys time" You have to prevent it from reoccurring. Surgery was not an option for me as my liver was so badly affected.  I have no doubt in my mind I will beat this diagnosis with the fantastic help of my wife and a very well known natuapath, both of whom have made a big difference. I just keep reminding myself that I have to starve the cancer from the nutrients it needs to survive. I immediately changed my diet to being as organic as possable, No Fat, no Preservatives, No sugar and no red meat and a lot more fruit.  As I work in a family business, I have been basically wind my work and stress, right back and do only what I want to do which is the best therapy. I also understand that bowel cancer is the easiest to treat. I have plans on being around for another 20 years !  I am 60 but have a LOT to do yet  including starting our own organic vegetable garden.Dunedigger

Hi Dunedigger You have been through a lot on your journey like many of us and you sound like you have the right frame of mind to beat this.  Being positive is the best way to go.  I hope you complete your chemo without many side affects and you finally get your organic vegie garden going.  If you are in the Sydney metro area I would certainly come and buy some. Stay strong Kaza

Just an update for those who are in the situation I was in . I remain in remission after 11 months of chemo. The last 5 months I have been just on Avastin, which has caused my liver tumors to further shrink. Some of the smaller tumors are no longer visible in a CAT scan along with the original bowel cancer. My oncologist has suggested I continue on Avastin for another 12 months.  My Surgeon and another oncologist has suggested I consider having radio ablation of the larger liver tumors. I figure I have not annoyed enough people  yet so will have to live for another 20 years to complete this goal !Dunedigger aka Rex

Sorry that I didn't reply earlier to your postings. Well done on your results, keep up the good work. I have been told that I have/ and will always be very positive about the whole cancer thing. No time for moping around and "why me?". I believe in sharing my stories with others, as sometimes just a little thing that is mentioned could have been a BIG problem for someone and knowing that you are not alone in this helps.

I have had people ask about being positive. I know it is impossible to remain positive especially when sick from chemo or in pain, but one aspect I have discovered about myself is I  NEVER  doubted that chemo would work for me. I had absolute faith the chemo  would work. I also knew that complementary therapies, diet and lifestyle changes  was an essential part of treatment. Chemo bought me time and remission, and I now am   approaching the end of chemo, the changes I have made will help to remain in remissionI also believe that cancer will never bite me on the bum again. This may be blind faith, but as a hypnotherapist ( in  previous decades ) I know the value of faith is very important. That is not to say that I meditate,  but my attitude is that cancer will not get me, at least not till I'm ready and that won't be till I'm 80, another 20 yearsCheers for nowDunedigger

Hi Louisa,

The garden is doing fine.We had lettuce, tomatoes, caspicans ,basil and on another part of the farm the biggest pumpkin patch. Now potatoes, carrots are in. We have hens but the dam things keep digging everything up.

Congratulations to all the staff involved in the website upgrade

With kind regards,

Re: Bowel Cancer My Story of Success so Far

Today I had my first PET scan, Previously I have been having CAT scans. Next week I see Professor Morris for Radio Ablation. At least he has agreed to seeing me seeing me. He has some reservations as I have 13 tumors on the liver so I just hope he will treat me.

I am feeling that my liver tumors are on the move again, as I have some pain in that region, and that, combined with my rising CEA, has me worried. The following week I see my oncologist for a review.

It is hard to believe that chemo has knocked out the cancer in the bowel , but the liver tumors are more resistant

This has become a blog, so I will continue to post for the info of other people who may read this after a diaganosis if the big 'C'

Today, Great news. Saw Professor Morris today, there is a good chance of having liver surgery to remove all liver tumors. My latest PET scan ( like a CAT scan ) shows there is no other cancer in my body. We will know more next week after my case goes to the panel to discuss treatment methods.

I go into hospital in Sydney for liver surgery Saturday 13th June. Hopefully most of the 'buggers' can be removed. I'm fearfull of the recovery phase of surgery, but excited about the prospect that I have a chance of containing the smaller ones.

Stay tuned

Hi Dunedigger,

I was very excited and happy about you being able to have the liver surgery. I can relate to your fear, but I feel this fear is a better feeling than the fear of not not being able to have the surgery.
You have been given a second chance in life. Will it be with Dr. Morris at St. George Hospital. I will pray that it will all go well and you have a speedy recovery.

Take care Molly

Re: Bowel Cancer My Story of Success so Far

Hi Everyone,

Yep I survived intensive care and now in my private room with views of Botany Bay. I have been told by reliable sources that all my tumors have been dealt with. It seems almost too good to be true. Pathology results will be back in a few days to confirm that the larger tumors were removed cleanly. Pain has been dealt with a little button. I have been up and walking with assistance.

Re: Bowel Cancer My Story of Success so Far

I have escaped the clutches of St George Private hospital and spent the last 2 days in a nearby hospital associated unit. Still very sore but managed to walk about a One Km lunch. It was worth it. I am quite sore tough but managing with Panadol.

I see the Professor in a months time before having radioactive microspheres (SIR-Spheres®) that contain yttrium-90 that emit high energy beta radiation in about 6 weeks time. Go here http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2002/11/021112075901.htm for more information.

It does involve a overnight stay at StVincents Hospital. This as I understand is just to mop up any tumor tissue that may have been missed, and is a nice once off alternative to precautionary post Operative chemotherapy. I continue to be amassed at the wealth of treatments available once you step out of the Chemotherapy mold.

I feel very privileged to have been treated by Professor Morris, and he has given my family a far greater hope.

I had 11 tumors ( all but 4 mostly small) in my liver and was very lucky that he finally agreed to treat me. Rarely can so many tumors be treated with out significant risks. I guess I had fitness and a determination to beat the 'litle buggers'

So people reading this who have been touched by bowel cancer and metz don't give up, keep fighting, and find cancer specialists who give you the results you want

Enough for now

Congratulations dunedigger! I'm glad to hear the operation was a sucess and its great to hear your up and about.

I've just read this post from the start and it makes quite a story. I'd never heard of the yttrium microspheres before either - very interesting!

Hi Dunedigger aka Rex,
I just read your story after posting my first blog with a little of my own fears.
You have made me feel so much better. I have nothing in my liver (just stage 3 bowel) and with a bit of luck (and a more controlled diet) I may never have. I was 50 when diagnosed and I'll feel really cheated if I don't make another 20. As you said - too much to do!!

Keep those "buggers" at bay,

Re: Bowel Cancer My Story of Success so Far

Hi Everyone,

I m glad that my ramblings has been an inspiration. I did intend it to be that way some time after I started the thread. Actually, on the old site blogs were not available but it may have been more appropriate to have been a blog, but I'm not going to start now.

I know a lot of people who read this will have just been diagnosed and will take heart at my story along with a lot of other people stories.

When I was first diagnosed with bowel cancer I could ( just ) live with that and the operation (Drunk that would take place. However the following week after my CAT scan showed multiple lesions in my liver my ( our ) world fell apart. I was told there was not much hope. It took 12 months before we started to seek surgical opinions. After this, a new world opened up.

I have since found another site like this in another country, where surgical options for liver cancer are enormous, but we do have them in Australia, but they don't seem to be well known.

I have learn't that many medical professionals don't really know all of the options that are available and remain comfortably in the cocoon of their own world of knowledge. ( This seems to apply especially to Oncologists who just use Chemo, no offense intended to any particular person )

Get out there and ask. If you don't live in the big citys, be prepared to travel to get the treatment you deserve and never stop fighting and asking questions till you get the answer YOU LIKE.

Dunedigger

EDIT 24/7/09 I am booked into St Vincent's for the SIRS, after all day tests on 3 different scanners.

I have also learnt that the professor took about 1/3rd of my liver AND most of it had been killed by Folfox6, Avastin and Vitamin C

We are off to Norfolk Island of a week on 2nd August

Re: Bowel Cancer My Story of Success so Far

Hi Everybody.

I'm back bigger and better than ever, well in my mind anyhow. Norfolk was fabulous. . A bit of a problem getting up before 10 am but anyway . . Ate our selves silly and broke all my ( self imposed ) diet rules.

4 Days after coming back I had the SIRSpheres internal radiation ( SIRT ) done, with out too many problems. I don't feel wonderful but feel a little better each day, nausea being controlled with a little medication.

I will now go back on Avastin and have a CAT scan done in two months. Can't wait for the results. Fingers crossed I'm cancer free. If I am Cancer free, there will be some excited health professionals who have helped me on my way including two Professors.

If you are fighting cancer, keep fighting, keep asking questions, and never say die, There are lots of treatments available that you have to search out, that is past being experimental but has not reached mainstream.

Yours in the fight !

Hi Dunedigger
I've just read this post from the start and feel so much better. I am normally an optimist and nothing really gets me down. However, last week, we were told that there is a recurrence of hubby's brain tumour (only 5 months since his resection in March) and it took the wind out of our sails. He will probably have surgery in 4 weeks time but his original diagnosis of GBM and the recurrence had me feeling like the odds were being stacked against us. Reading the posts above have given me a boost. We are off the the God Coast with the kids this Saturday for a week and I am sure thatw ill give us theb reak we need and get us psyched up for round 2 with this tumour. Hubby is only 50 so I want him around for another 30 years!

Re: Bowel Cancer My Story of Success so Far

Well the SIRT has taken it's toll. I have had fatigue and a feeling of illness for the full 6 weeks. Basically I have felt as bad for the last 4 weeks as if I had just had chemo.

However it will be worth it if the radiation mops up the surviving cancer cells. SIRT is so much more powerful than external radiation.

Unfortunately I (I We ) still have a business to run and although we are slowly selling parts of the business, it is hard to plan for the future retirement and traveling, not to mention my love of Endurance ( Horse ) Riding.

However I don't have time for cancer now and a CAT scan will confirm what my Surgeon said while I was in recovery . . . We think we got it all !

Get on with it and get out there !

Re: Bowel Cancer My Story of Success so Far

Hey dunedigger

I have done a couple of endurance rides, was quite a few years ago and i no longer ride. I did enjoy doing them though.

Re: Bowel Cancer My Story of Success so Far

An update . . .

Fatigue is still an issue even after 4 1/2 months but I think I may be coming out the other end. However I have had a rising CEA

Last Monday I had a CT which showed a small number of tiny tumors in my lungs !. Professor Morris was not worried, he will ablate them if they can't be controlled. We think they grew while I was not having avastin in the period leading up to the liver surgery.

However I have started on a low dose of oral 5FU and after 3 weeks my CEA dropped 10% down to 22. So it is all good news. My liver looks tumor free after the surgery and radiation.

I have a new luxury camper for my 4WD and have been spending time out in the bush, my love is high country rain-forests on the eastern escarpment of NSW, good therapy !

I remain committed that this 'disease' will not get me even though I will have to live with it for the rest of my life.

Dunedigger wow you have done wonderfully - I read your story from the start, this morning when I was feeling a little down - your story has lifted me and given me hope. I was diagnosed with aggressive bowel cancer in August 2009,had 7 cm removed and both ovaries, the liver has 12 tumors which is being treated with Avastin and chemo-Xeloda. I have looked into Radio ablation therapy (head bit stuffed at moment)think that's what it is called -and oncologist said too risky as could burn the outside of the liver. I have radically changed my diet - hopefully not too late - the produce closer to the ground and preferably organic is the way to go.
You mentioned Grace Gawler - presumably Ian's wife - my Dad and sister and I went on one of their retreats about 23 years ago when Dad had Prostate cancer. I thought it was beneficial - Dad the ultimate sceptic did not!I am now reading The Dragons Blessing - very inspirational and the fact most of it is in Victoria, where I have lived all my life - I know the places he writes about.Little did I know 23 years ago that I too would be drawing on the strength of Ian Gawler.Once again thankyou for sharing your journey and I hope you live a very happy and long life.

Welcome! I am a 2 year survivor of bowel cancer - finished 6 months of chemo in April 2008 and I also have been inspired by Dune diggers story.
Good luck with the chemo. Make sure that you take it easy as the treatment progresses. Ask lots of questions.

Samex;

Thank you for your noice comment !

I am really worries about my life as I have 3 young kids ( 13,11,3 years),I came from Shanghai 20 years ago.MY wife also from Shanghai would not speaking English well.

I were told there are two program to do chemo (folfox4 and Xelos ).
In Shanghai they do XELOS once each three weeks for 6 month after 3-4 weeks surgery. But Concord Hosplital have to wait 6 to 7 weeks. I do not which program it to be used for me.

I did lots of reaserch what they said XELOS much easy than FOLFOX4 to go through. So I am really scare if I would go through this 6 months.

Samex, What you think is that easy to go through this 6 month ?

Hi Everyone,

Firstly, thanks to everyone for your support both to myself but to other readers.

The posting on http://www.cancerconnections.com.au/content/fear-cancer-tumour-returning raises interesting issues. I feel that most people live with the fear for the rest of their life.

I now feel that I will have to live with cancer for life, taking drugs that as a result of I am unable to do a quarter of the things I used to be able to do.

In the next few years I will have to decide if my past active life style is a thing of the past and I will have to be content with living a sedentary life style.

I can dream of picking up where I left of living the dream, but next month . . . . . . I will be a 2 year survivor.

Continue the dream. . . . that gives you a reason to beat this confounding disease

Hi Richard,
I had a different treatment. I had Folfox5 and oxalipalitan every second week for 6 months.I started treatment 5 weeks after surgery.
I think that you should take the advice of your oncologist as to what is the best for you.
No treatment is easy and everyone reacts differently. My doseage had to be reduced twice during the process as my body couldn't cope with what the origanal doseage was.
I have no idea about diabetes but I'm sure that your doctor will be able to help you.
You're right in that there are so many thngs to be worried about but there are lots of places to seek advice and help.
Have you contacted the Cancer Council Help Line? I don't know but they may even hae a translation service that may help your wife as well.

Good luck, Samex
