Sailor went to Church Today

Sailor's picture

Sailor went to church today, a thing he has been known to do from time to time.

As someone born in the first half of last century I am a traditionalist and enjoy traditional hymns, a good pipe organ and the reflections. One of the hymns sung, as it was the first Sunday in the New Year, was written by Dietrich Bonnhoeffer for New Year 1945. He was in prison and knew that the Nazi’s would shortly execute him. The second verse for some reason set me thinking about this site and the many people for whom the New year brings uncertainty. I put it here with no further comment.

Yet is this heart by its old foe tormented,
Still evil days bring burdens hard to bear;
Oh, give our frightened souls the sure salvation
for which, O Lord, You taught us to prepare.

This made me think of all the wonderful churches i have been into in europe and england, of course australia too. Although i am not particularly religious (certainly not knocking those that are) i find that in these old churches that there is just a very peaceful air about them. It was a plan of mine to go back and visit them this year, although thats been put on hold for a while.
